Pharmacies are able to perform many services for their customers and the residents in the community. Their main function, and what many people think of when they hear the word “pharmacy”, is to dispense medication as prescribed by a doctor or offer customers recommendations for over-the-counter medications to ease their symptoms.  The pharmacist will not only verify and fill the prescription, but they will also make sure there aren’t any negative interactions between medications the patient is taking. The pharmacy also participates in drug utilization reviews, which involves managing their patient’s therapy and monitoring the effectiveness and interactions of the medication. 

Absolutely, any and all prescriptions can be filled at an on-site pharmacy, as long as our providers write the script or refills the script for the patient. We offer the same pharmaceutical services to our patients and customers as a pharmacy that is not located inside a medical facility.  For prescription refills where the on-site pharmacy wasn’t the original dispensing pharmacy, they will need all of the prescription information, including the contact information of the pharmacy that did dispense the medication. They will need to verify that the prescription is still valid and that there are refills still available for the patient to fill. It will also help to ensure that the medication isn’t being abused by filling multiple prescriptions through several pharmacies

There are a lot of benefits of having a pharmacy on-site at the medical facility where you are receiving medical care. The biggest benefit would be convenience. With a pharmacy on-site, you can stop into the pharmacy on the way back to your car, or whatever your mode of transportation is, to get your prescription filled without leaving the building. In most cases of prescription medications, the treatment starts immediately, so being able to leave with your medication in hand means that you are able to start your treatment right away. Particularly for patients who don’t drive, it saves them the struggle of having to find a pharmacy either close to their house or easily accessible on their way home. There is a higher adherence to treatment as well when a patient doesn’t have to be inconvenienced to fulfill a prescription. Having the pharmacy onsite can make it easier for the pharmacists, as if they have any questions about the prescription instructions, they can easily communicate with the onsite provider who prescribed them for clarification.
